Overflow

Glass with splashes of liquid overflowing the edgesI remember as a kid we had a spring up the hill that fed water to our house. I remember helping my dad bury the water line from the hill down to the house. I remember the reservoirs that captured the water to send it down to the house. We had a small reservoir first that served as a filter. We then had a 500-gallon reservoir that captured it before sending it to the house. I’m not sure where Dad got the idea to build it like this, but I remember times when we had so much water that we could see the “overflow pipe” emptying the excess water onto the ground.

I’ve always thought of overflow as “more than enough”. If there was overflow in our water, we could use plenty. It was quite different when we had a well that would run dry. Paul talks about an overflow of love that he has for the people of the Thessalonian church. Check this out…

11 May God our Father and our Lord Jesus bring us to you very soon. 12 And may the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows. 13 May he, as a result, make your hearts strong, blameless, and holy as you stand before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes again with all his holy people. Amen. (1 Thessalonians 3:11-13 NLT)

I love this picture of love overflowing into others. I also love the results of an overflowing love. His prayer is that hearts are stronger, blameless and holy because of this overflow of love. I want to love like that. I want my love for others to not only bless them, but it helps me grow too in the process of loving others. My heart grows stronger when I love others deeply and generously. My heart becomes more pure, blameless and holy as I seek to Love God and Love Others.  There is profound expansion in my heart for others as I seek the heart of God. There is also expansion in my heart for God as I learn to love others deeply. I want the overflow of my heart to be love for God and love for others.

Pressing On!
