Humble

I believe that these a humble person is not a “push over”. A humble person not full of self-pity. A humble person knows who they are and who they aren’t. A humble person is defined as someone who is “courteously respectful” to others. An arrogant person in contrast is “someone displays an sense of “self-importance and overbearing pride”. I have learned to work with people who fit both sides. I have learned that I can’t really change their thinking or their behavior, but I am responsible for my response to these character qualities. In fact, my response to others humility or pride screams out which side of the scale I’m closest too.

It is very obvious in scripture that the Lord loves humble people. Isaiah tells of the upcoming destruction of Babylon. He reminds me that the Lord does not favor arrogance or pride. Check this out….

11 “I, the Lord, will punish the world for its evil
and the wicked for their sin.
I will crush the arrogance of the proud
and humble the pride of the mighty. (Isaiah 13:11 NLT)

I don’t think humble people are door mats.

I don’t think arrogant people are leaders.

I think humility is a characteristic of someone who trusts in The Lord to lead them in their life. Humility is an excellent characteristic of a leader. They know who they are and who they are not. I believe humility is a great character quality of a Christ follower. Paul said it well…..

20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20 NLT)

I am responsible for my response to Christ.

I am responsible for my response to others.

I am responsible for my response to arrogant people.

I am responsible for my response to others who are prideful.

When I read this passage of scripture this morning, I was reminded of a song written by Lori Mckena and recorded by Tim McGraw.

Humble and Kind

You know there’s a lot that goes by the front door
Don’t forget the keys under the mat
Childhood stars shine, always stay humble and kind
Go to church ’cause your momma says to
Visit grandpa every chance that you can
It won’t be a waste of time
Always stay humble and kind

Chorus: Hold the door say please say thank you
Don’t steal, don’t cheat, and don’t lie
I know you got mountains to climb but
Always stay humble and kind
When the dreams you’re dreamin’ come to you
When the work you put in is realized
Let yourself feel the pride but
Always stay humble and kind

Don’t expect a free ride from no one
Don’t hold a grudge or a chip and here’s why
Bitterness keeps you from flying
Always stay humble and kind
Know the difference between sleeping with someone
And sleeping with someone you love
I love you ain’t no pick up line so
Always stay humble and kind (Chorus)

When it’s hot, eat a root beer, a popsicle
Shut off the AC and roll the windows down
Let that summer sun shine
Always stay humble and kind
Don’t take for granted the love this life gives you
When you get where you’re goin’
Don’t forget turn back around
Help the next one in line
Always stay humble and kind
