Advocate

This is a word that to me is similar to what an attorney does in a court of law. The attorney advocates on behalf of his or her client. An advocate doesn’t have to be an attorney, it can be anyone who speaks or acts on behalf of another.  I am an advocate for my family. I am an advocate for the Lord. The Lord is definitely my Advocate before the Father.

I’m in 1 Samuel this morning and Saul is pursuing David to kill him with 3000 elite fighters from the kingdom of Israel.  Saul goes into a cave to relieve himself and David and his men are hiding deeper in the same cave! David cuts off a piece of Saul’s robe. He then feels guilty about even doing that to the Lord’s anointed.  He confronts Saul outside the cave and shows him the piece of his robe that he has. Saul knew that David could have killed him in such a vulnerable position. Then David made it clear his position in this conflict between the two of them. Check this out….

12 “May the Lord judge between us. Perhaps the Lord will punish you for what you are trying to do to me, but I will never harm you. 13 As that old proverb says, ‘From evil people come evil deeds.’ So you can be sure I will never harm you. 14 Who is the king of Israel trying to catch anyway? Should he spend his time chasing one who is as worthless as a dead dog or a single flea? 15 May the Lord therefore judge which of us is right and punish the guilty one. He is my advocate, and he will rescue me from your power!” (1 Samuel 24:12-15 NLT)

I was reminded by David’s response to Saul that Jesus is my Advocate. He is the Son of God and He came to earth to become the Advocate for all mankind. He speaks for me. He counsels me. He represents me. He intercedes for me. He defends me. He fights for me. He rescues me. He is for me for sure. He directs my paths and guards my step. I was reminded of another writing of David. The Lord is my shepherd;
    I have all that I need.
He lets me rest in green meadows;
    he leads me beside peaceful streams.
    He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
    bringing honor to his name.
Even when I walk
    through the darkest valley,[a]
I will not be afraid,
    for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
    protect and comfort me.
You prepare a feast for me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
    My cup overflows with blessings.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
    all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
    forever. (Psalm 23:1-6 NLT)

He has me. I have Him. He is all I need.

Pressing On!
