Light Leads To Life

Hand drawing light bulbI am not generally afraid of the dark. I will say that I’m not a fan of the dark. When I say dark, I don’t usually think of “pitch black darkness”. There are usually lights on the refrigerator, microwave, modem, etc.… that add a little light to the room. A week or so ago, the power went off in the middle of the night and that is dark – no light from appliances or the security light in the back yard. I’m thankful that iPhone has a flashlight feature! True darkness is the absence of any light. I’ve not experienced that a bunch in my life for sure.

I came across a passage that Jesus spoke to the people and He clearly says He is the LIGHT of the world. Check this out…

12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” (John 8:12 NLT)

Light is a unique force. I decided to look up “characteristics of light” and it speaks of how critical light can be to the photographer. I don’t know a lot of details about that. Some characteristics about light that I thought about:

Light is silent

Light gets attention

Light chases darkness out

Light gives direction

Light reveals

Jesus calls His followers the Light of the World too. He wants us to illuminate the world we live in with truth, honor, goodness, and importantly, LOVE. I feel like His Word has illuminated my way and I’m responsible for illuminating the way for others. I want to follow The LIGHT OF THE WORLD – Jesus and let Him shine inside of me. I want Him to show me the way. I want to follow Him and show others the way.

Confession

flashlightThis word means admitting mistakes and embarrassment. This is an important first step to coming to terms with my sinful nature. I’m prone to wander into sin. In fact I’m often drawn to it like a magnet. The Word of God speaks into my life to help me avoid getting caught up in the deceit of sin. I really needed to hear this Word from John this morning. Check this out…

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. (1 John 1:5-10 NIV)

I’m thankful that when I stray, the Word of God is there to show me the proper path. His Word is the keeper of the way I should live. The Word illuminates the path for my life and keeps me walking in the light. The darkness is lurking just beyond the light, but I’m staying within the glow of His Word. He is faithful to forgive me when I wander off into the darkness – His Word still shines!

I’m so thankful for forgiveness and “do-overs”. I’m so thankful for His Mercy and Grace that extends even to me. I need washing of my soul on a regular basis. I need Him to purify my mind! Confession is a lot of work – but necessary work.

Illuminated

Christmas Lights SetI love looking at Christmas lights. I don’t mind tacky or too much. I like the colored lights and I like trees lit with only one color. I pretty much like all of them. I am a fan of light in general. I’m not super freaked out by the darkness, but I would prefer to have light if I’m going out in the dark.  Paul really speaks with boldness on this subject in Ephesians. Check this out…

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. (Ephesians 5:8-13 NIV)

Darkness can hide secret behavior. If it’s daylight, it’s harder to hide. My Mom used to say that nothing really productive and good after midnight. I would get this speech when I wanted to be out with my friends really late. She was right in thinking of my friends back in High School.

I remember a trip to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. While we were touring the cave, we sat down in this huge room and the guide turned off all the lights and darkness seems as thick as a wool blanket. I couldn’t see my hand right next to my eye. It was pitch black and eerie.  He then lit a small wooden match and the huge cave room was illuminated!  It was a principle that I never forgot. The thicker and the deeper the darkness, the more significant one little light is. I really want to be a light to others. I want the light of Jesus to live in me and through me. I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t always do a good job of this, but I really want to honor Creator God with my life and walk in the illumination of His Word!
