Wisdom

I have learned over the years to seek out people who are more knowledgeable and more experienced than I am. They can give great counsel and wisdom because of their experience and their knowledge. Wisdom is often a rare find. Some people who should be wise from experience are actually not because they didn’t learn anything from their experience. I’ve witnessed this over and over again in the way people manage money. There are people who lost just about everything in the last recession because of going deep into debt and they are repeating the same behavior again.  I want to be wise by learning from the mistakes of my past. I even want to learn from the mistakes of others.

As I’m nearing the end of the book of Job, he is speaking eloquently about wisdom. His faith in God is deeply grounded and it is showing up even in his profound suffering. He points us to God for wisdom and understanding. Check this out…

12 “But do people know where to find wisdom?
    Where can they find understanding?
13 No one knows where to find it,
    for it is not found among the living.

17 Wisdom is more valuable than gold and crystal.
    It cannot be purchased with jewels mounted in fine gold.

23 “God alone understands the way to wisdom;
    he knows where it can be found,
24 for he looks throughout the whole earth
    and sees everything under the heavens.

27 Then he saw wisdom and evaluated it.
    He set it in place and examined it thoroughly.
28 And this is what he says to all humanity:
‘The fear of the Lord is true wisdom;
    to forsake evil is real understanding.’” (Job 28:12-13,17,23-24,27-28 NLT)

I want to be wise. I want to grow in wisdom and understanding. I want to give wise counsel because the Lord is imparting wisdom to me.  I sometimes ignore wisdom because I want what I want when I want it.  I would be wise to seek wisdom throughout each day. Sometimes wisdom can come from unlikely places. Wisdom can show up in a question. Wisdom can show up in a prayer. Wisdom can show up in an everyday conversation. Wisdom can drop right into my spirit from the Lord. I believe if I seek the Lord and ask Him for wisdom, He will deliver. Check this out…

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. (James 1:5 NLT)

Pressing On!
