Why? – It’s not a bad question

I’ve heard it said that if you don’t know your “why”, your “how” won’t make sense. There is a reason behind all that I do – that is my “why”.  I’ve learned to check on my “why” as I walk through this life. This reveals my motives and the location of my heart in multiple matters and situations.

Moses was discouraged after going to Pharoah for the first time to deliver God’s message. I think Moses thought that Pharoah would simply agree and that would be that. Pharoah not only pushed back on Moses, he made life harder for the people of Israel.  Moses brings the “Why” question to God. Check this out….

22 Then Moses went back to the Lord and protested, “Why have you brought all this trouble on your own people, Lord? Why did you send me? 23 Ever since I came to Pharaoh as your spokesman, he has been even more brutal to your people. And you have done nothing to rescue them!” (Exodus 5:22-23 NLT)

I think God is ok with “Why?”. I think the Lord knows I’m thinking that. I also think the Lord sees this as a teachable moment. When things do go as I think they should, I usually ask “Why?”.  When my kids were younger, they asked this question a lot. I actually welcomed the question because I knew they really wanted to know and understand.

I think it’s a bit sad that we’ve quit asking “why?” because it means we want to understand and get clarity on some subject or a particular situation.  Asking questions means that I’m engaged and teachable.

God is not angry when I ask “why?”. He is so patient, kind and generous with me. He welcomes my heart. I’m also careful to ask “why?” with respect and humility. The posture of my heart when I ask “Why?” is critical to understanding God’s purpose and His plan.

Pressing On!
