Watching

I remember my mom telling me as a young person that someone is always watching me. I don’t think I’m someone famous or notable, by any stretch of the imagination. I do think that the actions and activities of my life reveal what I believe. I can say what I believe, but the choices I make reveal who I am. I’ve also learned that people will pass judgement on my actions without asking for an explanation.  My family and trusted friends believe in me even when things appear to be against me. They know me the best.

Moses was a Hebrew kid, adopted by Pharoah’s daughter. His mother had the privilege of nursing him until she had to give him up. She poured into him, and he realized his heritage even though he was an “Egyptian by adoption”.  He made a decision one day that changed his life forever. He was being watched. Check this out….

11 Many years later, when Moses had grown up, he went out to visit his own people, the Hebrews, and he saw how hard they were forced to work. During his visit, he saw an Egyptian beating one of his fellow Hebrews. 12 After looking in all directions to make sure no one was watching, Moses killed the Egyptian and hid the body in the sand.

13 The next day, when Moses went out to visit his people again, he saw two Hebrew men fighting. “Why are you beating up your friend?” Moses said to the one who had started the fight.

14 The man replied, “Who appointed you to be our prince and judge? Are you going to kill me as you killed that Egyptian yesterday?”

Then Moses was afraid, thinking, “Everyone knows what I did.” 15 And sure enough, Pharaoh heard what had happened, and he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in the land of Midian. (Exodus 2:11-14 NLT)

Some people do things to be seen by others. Other people are a bit more private.

I thought the song by Brad Paisely called “Celebrity”

The world is not the stage, nor am I the star. I do think that the things I do today matter, whether someone is watching or not.  I’ve heard integrity defined as “what you do when no one is watching”.

“Watching You” by Rodney Atkins also came to mind for me as a parent. My kids have been watching me their whole lives – they still are.

I do want to be an example of a faithful follower of Jesus. I may not follow Him like others expect, but I’m going to live my life the way He calls me to live. Others may judge me or have an opinion of me, but what the Lord thinks of me matters most to me. He’s always watching. He sees me when others don’t.

Pressing On!
