Vow

I used to think of this word as related only to a wedding. When a man and woman made a vow to one another to keep themselves ONLY to each other. In fact, the wedding vows gave some scenarios where they would keep their vow – in sickness, health, better, worse, rich or poor until death separates.

God takes our vows pretty serious. He wants our word to mean something. He wants us to always be honest and trustworthy. If my words are hollow and meaningless, my vows will be as well. God told Moses to remind the people of the importance of vows. Check this out…

A man who makes a vow to the Lord or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do. (Numbers 30:2 NLT)

When I keep a vow, it speaks to my character and my ethics.

I should enter into a vow fully understanding the scope of its importance. I’m not sure young couples realize the length, and depth of wedding vows. My wife and I have been married for 24 years and counting because our vows mean something to us as well as to our children and our entire family. We marriage vows are broken, the ripple effects last for years and years.

Making a vow is easy, keeping a vow often takes a lot of self-discipline and work. When I consider making a vow, I should take some time to count the costs and make sure that the Lord would be honored with my vow as well. I don’t think the Lord requires me to make vows, but He does expect me to keep the ones I make.

Pressing On!
