Voice of God

I’ve always been suspicious of people who hear God tell them to do certain things. I’ve had people tell me that God told them to buy a car or a motorcycle. I have also heard people tell me that God told them certain things about another person. I feel like I’ve been prompted by the Lord, but I can’t say that I’ve hear the audible voice of God. Let me be clear, I believe that God can do anything He wants. I just don’t believe that He does anything I want. I believe that there are those who are so spiritually connected with the Lord that He really does direct their path. I also believe that there are those who plan to do things or purchase things and then bring the Lord into the discussion afterward. I want to hear from Him BEFORE I make plans or BEFORE I make a purchase. I learn something about my trust in Him, when I lean in and listen to Him.

I’m reading about Elijah and he was quite a prophet of God. He is part of this big event on Mt. Carmel where God really shows up in a powerful way. He is threatened by the wicked queen Jezebel and he flees for his life.  He goes to Mt. Sinai, the place where the Lord met with Moses. He is fearful. He is at a low point of his life.  Check this out….

11 “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. (1 Kings 19:11-13 NLT)

I believe the voice of God speaks through His Word to me each morning. Sometimes, my hearing is better than at other times. I have to settle my soul and really lean in and listen to hear from Him. He speaks to me even when I’m hard of hearing. I think He’s even yelled at me before! I hear best from Him in the early morning, but He speaks to me all day long. I’m at my best in the early morning and I want Him to speak to me when I’m at my best.

The voice of God can come through others. I’ve heard the Lord speak to me via messages from my pastor. I’ve heard the voice of the Lord through a business leaders podcast. I’ve heard the voice of God through my children. I’ve heard the voice of God through a season of suffering. I’ve heard the voice of God through a pandemic.  I believe the Lord is consistently and constantly speaking – it’s up to me to hear Him. I often have too much noise in my life to hear His whisper. He loves to speak when my soul is settled before Him in a posture of trust and thirst for Him.

Pressing On!
