Strong Tower

I imagine a strong tower to be part of a huge fortress where safety can be found in the midst of a chaotic world. I may have seen too many movies where the weak are fleeing to a fortress or place of refuge from people who seek to destroy them.

I guess I feel like that sometimes when it seems the enemy is in hot pursuit of me, seeking to trip me up or knock me down. I look to the Lord as my Strong Tower, my Refuge and I belong with Him. Check this out from Proverbs….

10 The name of the Lord is a strong fortress;
    the godly run to him and are safe.

11 The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense;
    they imagine it to be a high wall of safety.(Proverbs 18:10-11 NLT)

Isaiah was living in a time when the Lord was exacting justice on the wicked of the earth. The punishment was real and widespread. There was a small remnant of people who were righteous and saved by the Lord. I also look to the Lord for protection and provision. Check this out….

1O Lord, I will honor and praise your name,
    for you are my God.
You do such wonderful things!
    You planned them long ago,
    and now you have accomplished them.
Therefore, strong nations will declare your glory;
    ruthless nations will fear you.

But you are a tower of refuge to the poor, O Lord,
    a tower of refuge to the needy in distress.
You are a refuge from the storm
    and a shelter from the heat.(Isaiah 25:1,3-4 NLT)

My home protects me from the crazy weather elements. My home cannot protect me from everything. The Lord is the shelter over all of my life. I don’t understand where sickness and death fit into His shelter, but I believe one day I will understand. Until then, I will put all of my trust in the Lord of Heaven. He is my Strong Tower of Refuge. I don’t have anyone else to trust that has the Power to change or heal like Him. I don’t always understand, but I will still trust Him.

These passages reminded me of a song called “Strong Tower”from several years ago by a band called Kutless.

When I wander through the desert
And I’m longing for my home
All my dreams have gone astray
When I’m stranded in the valley
And I’m tired and all alone
It seems like I’ve lost my way

I go running to your mountain
Where your mercy sets me free

You are my strong tower
A shelter over me
Beautiful and mighty
Everlasting king
You are my strong tower
Fortress when I’m weak
Your name is true and holy
And your face is all I see

In the middle of my darkness
In the midst of all my fear
You’re my refuge and my hope
When the storm of life is raging
And the thunder’s all I hear
You speak softly to my soul
