Sign

I still chuckle when I remember the bit that comedian, Bill Engval used to do called “Here’s Your Sign”.  He labeled it as if giving a sign to stupid people who asked stupid questions. I sometimes think I need one of his “signs” because I might miss something that seems obvious to others. I see signs every day, up and down the road. There are signs that tell me what road I’m on. There are signs that tell me what the maximum and minimum speed I should drive. There are directional signs and warning signs. Signs are all over the place – some more obvious than others.

This morning I came across the passage where God gives Noah, his family and all the animals on the boat a sign that He will never destroy the earth with a flood again. Check this out….

Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.(Genesis 9:8-13 NLT)

I am thankful for this sign from God. I also believe that the Lord still gives me signs to follow. The sign can come from His Word and the sign can come from His Presence. He has given me “signs” over the years from other believers and even family members. God might have used me to point out signs to others.  Just because God gives me a sign, doesn’t mean that I see the sign or “get it”. I am sometimes so distracted with my own self-interests that I miss Him pointing me in a different direction.

I want to be sensitive to any sign that the Lord might give me. His sign might be subtle and simple, or it might just be a billboard. I do notice signs of His Presence and His creative works. I enjoy watching a beautiful sun set or sun rise. I believe that the Lord gives signs all the time that point to Him as the Creator and Sustainer of all life.

I don’t want Him to have to hit me over the head to see His signs. I want my heart to be open to hearing from Him and seeing the direction that He’s calling me to go. His signs are throughout His Word for sure.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
