Seven Things

I am a bit of a list maker. It keeps me on track. If I’m organizing my day, I will make a list of things to do. I will sometimes map out my day with lists. I sometimes wish the apps at the grocery story put the coupons in the order of the isles I’m on. If my list has no rhyme or reason to it, I feel like it’s taking more time than it’s saving.  I have a list of things to do today. If something gets missed, it will move to the next day or possibly removed from my list altogether.

I was reading Proverbs this morning and came across a list that Solomon says is God’s list of seven things He hates. I had to stop and process this a bit. Check this out….

16 There are six things the Lord hates—
    no, seven things he detests:
17 haughty eyes,  (1)
    a lying tongue, (2)
hands that kill the innocent, (3)
18 a heart that plots evil, (4)
feet that race to do wrong, (5)
19 a false witness who pours out lies, (6)
a person who sows discord in a family. (7) (Proverbs 6:16-19 NLT)

I thought I knew what “haughty eyes” were, but the dictionary made it clear. The word “Haughty” means: “disdainfully proud; snobbish; scornfully arrogant.” The Lord loves humility over arrogance EVERYTIME. I did notice that lying appears to be here twice – #2 & #6. I used to tell my kids as they were growing up, I could handle the truth no matter how hard it was to hear, but I hate lies. I feel like lying destroys trust from the inside out. If a person will tell one lie, they will tell thousands.  Lying is often too convenient. Who will ever know the truth? The Lord ALWAYS knows the truth.

The Lord knows my struggles with sin. He can help me eradicate sin from my soul. I believe that sin is birthed deep in my heart and makes it way out, if nurtured there. The Lord wants to do “heart work” on me each day. He wants to smother the sin in my soul with His Love and His Grace. He wants me to keep my eye on Him – The Author of all life. He is the Creator of Eternal life as well.  I want to steer clear of this list of seven things as these reveal a heart full of sin.

Pressing On!
