Sacred vs. Common

There are lots of things in our culture that used to be sacred but is now common. There used to be subjects that were never discussed in public that are not part of our common conversations when the subject comes up.  I feel like if I were to give examples, I might be invading the sacred space for some, while others would not be bothered at all.

Aaron was charged with being the high priest for the people of Israel. He probably aspired to this position until he realized the weight of it. I can only imagine the load he carried as he offered sacrifices for the people of Israel and showed them the way back to the Lord. He was charged with handling the sacred things of God. The Lord gave him some simple but very important instructions that I think are relevant to me today. Check this out…

10 You must distinguish between what is sacred and what is common, between what is ceremonially unclean and what is clean. 11 And you must teach the Israelites all the decrees that the Lord has given them through Moses.” (Leviticus 10:10-11 NLT)

I believe that there are principles that the Lord today gives that are sacred and really need to become more common, especially among Christ followers.

Love – I should love as Jesus loves.

Truth – I must always speak the truth dripping with love.

Grace – I must give grace to others, because we’ve been given much grace.

Respect – I think we should show others respect because everyone I meet is a child of God.

Patience – (I’m still working a lot on this one!) I should be patient with others as it may take them some time before they can see all that God has done and is doing for them.

Kind – This is a gift that costs me nothing but is worth more than all the resources I have.

Humble – I must live humbly before the Lord because without Him, I am nothing or no one.

I think this could be a rather long list. I think it’s important to talk with the Lord about the sacred and common. I realize that some of the things under the old law that were sacred became common after Jesus came. I would like for my journey with the Lord to include all things common and all things sacred. I would like to know Him so well that I invite Him to help me discern and move seamlessly between the two areas. He wants every part of my life committed to Him – even the common stuff.

Pressing On!
