Rescued

After returning home from Tennessee yesterday, I received a call from my son who had taken the boat out for a little Labor Day riding and relaxing. They had a tire that was coming apart and needed replacement. Thankfully, I had a spare tire on the boat trailer, but they didn’t have all the necessary tools to change it out. I grabbed my keys, wallet and some tools and headed out to get them. They almost had it but needed a couple of tools that I brought.  I was thankful that we were able to “limp” home on the spare. I’m happy to rescue when I can – I’ve been rescued more times than I can count from flat tires, to being towed, to rescued from being lost. I could go on for a minute about being rescued. Whether I’m being rescued or helping rescue someone else, I’ve learned to pray for the Lord’s favor and help. He is the ULTIMATE RESCUER!

Moses is coming on the scene in the early part of Exodus and it’s interesting to hear him tell the back story on his own life. He is the writer of the first five books of the Bible including Exodus. He is rescued from the death sentence of the Pharaoh upon all the new boys born to the Hebrew women. He is adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter as her own son, but he knows of his heritage and his people. He rescues a Hebrew slave from a beat down, but then kills the Egyptian thinking that no one saw him. It was known to many so he fled to Midian. Check this out….

When Moses arrived in Midian, he sat down beside a well. 16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters who came as usual to draw water and fill the water troughs for their father’s flocks. 17 But some other shepherds came and chased them away. So Moses jumped up and rescuedthe girls from the shepherds. Then he drew water for their flocks.

18 When the girls returned to Reuel, their father, he asked, “Why are you back so soon today?”

19 “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds,” they answered. “And then he drew water for us and watered our flocks.”

20 “Then where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave him there? Invite him to come and eat with us.”

21 Moses accepted the invitation, and he settled there with him. In time, Reuel gave Moses his daughter Zipporah to be his wife. 22 Later she gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, for he explained, “I have been a foreigner in a foreign land.”(Exodus 2:15b-22 NLT)

The rescuer needs rescued sometimes by others. The biblical text obviously skips over some years as Moses becomes a man and a Dad. His life began with rescue and he would rescue his wife and sisters and then grow into the leader God chose to rescue His people from the slavery of Egypt.

I’m thankful for the Lord’s rescue of me. I still need Him to rescue me from my sin and from my own stupid choices and desires. I don’t always see the trouble that is ahead of me from the choices I make. I would rather be the rescuer than the one being rescued. I’m thankful for the rescue that the Lord provides from me very often and it’s often repetitive. I’m thankful that He doesn’t give up on rescuing me.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
