Remember When

I think it’s a good practice to look back at my history every now and then. How did I get here? What are some of the choices that brought me to this place in life? Who are some people that I connected with along life’s journey that helped me to where I am? The answers to those questions will give insight to my present-day life. My list of people to be thankful for is long and my heart swells with gratitude when I start to think through the list.

Today, we celebrate mothers here in the US. My Wife, Mom, Mammie, Aunts, Mother-in-law, my previous wife; – these ladies have had an impact upon my life. I am so thankful for them and the memories that they helped me create.

Jeremiah was speaking to the people of Israel and Judah about the destruction the Lord was bringing. He was instructed by the Lord to stand outside the temple and give his message regarding repentance and the Lord’s destruction that was coming. This message didn’t set well with some of the priests and leaders. They grabbed him and were planning to mob him and kill him when wisdom entered the room. Check this out…..

17 Then some of the wise old men stood and spoke to all the people assembled there. 18 They said, “Remember when Micah of Moresheth prophesied during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah. He told the people of Judah,

‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says:
Mount Zion will be plowed like an open field;
    Jerusalem will be reduced to ruins!
A thicket will grow on the heights
    where the Temple now stands.’

19 But did King Hezekiah and the people kill him for saying this? No, they turned from their sins and worshiped the Lord. They begged him for mercy. Then the Lordchanged his mind about the terrible disaster he had pronounced against them. So we are about to do ourselves great harm.”(Jeremiah 26:17-19 NLT)

It often helps to take a look at the past to keep from making mistakes that are similar. A wise person learns from his or her own mistakes. An even wiser person learns from the mistakes of others.

I’m thankful for most of my memories. There are some that are painful and heart-breaking, but nevertheless, lessons were learned. I want to be wise going forward as I occasionally look backward.

I love this song by Alan Jackson called: Remember When

Pressing On!
