Plain & Simple

Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote and recorded a song called “Simple Man” back in 1973. It was a powerful ballad for a rock band. It has some strong lyrical content that is actually some good counsel. The song is about advice that the writer’s Mom shared with him.  My Mom used to use the words “plain and simple” together quite a bit. I think she was reminding me that often the choices we are faced with are “plain and simple”. As I’ve gotten older, I realize what she didn’t say – She didn’t say it was easy.

I think following the Lord is plain and simple – not always easy.  I can hear the angst in King David’s tone as he asked the Lord to help. He begins by asking the Lord to listen to his heart. Check this out….

Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house;
    I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe.
Lead me in the right path, O Lord,
    or my enemies will conquer me.
Make your way plain for me to follow. (Psalm 5:7-8 NLT)

I’m still learning to worship the Lord first and then ask for Him to lead me. My worship of Him involves my respect for Him. I want to enter His Presence with awe. I welcome His Presence into my heart in awe.  His Presence in me gives me His perspective on choices that I face. He gives me counsel with His Presence in me.

His Presence in me illuminates the path I should take. I want Him to lead me. I want Him to show me. I know that it’s not always easy to follow Him, but it is always a plain and simple choice. I’m asking Him today to make His way for me clear (aka plain).

Pressing On!

Dwayne
