On The Move

As a REALTOR, I help people move all the time from one home to another. I have to confess that while it’s often exciting to be moving into a new home, I also think about all the stuff that has to be moved. My wife and I recently did some renovations to our home and we were a bit out of pocket for about 3 weeks and it seemed like a year! Moving can be fun because a new chapter in life is beginning. It can also be lots of work and adjustment throughout the process.

Esau and Jacob appear to have reconciled their differences. They lived fairly close together, but as their families grew as well as their crops and support team, the space seemed to shrink. So, Esau decides to move. Check this out…

Esau took his wives, his children, and his entire household, along with his livestock and cattle—all the wealth he had acquired in the land of Canaan—and moved away from his brother, Jacob. There was not enough land to support them both because of all the livestock and possessions they had acquired. So Esau (also known as Edom) settled in the hill country of Seir. (Genesis 26:6-8 NLT)

I was thinking that Esau had settled the land first, so Jacob should have been the one to move. I’m not sure of the details of the brother’s relationship. Their families grew to become big influencers in the land. In those times, they didn’t have houses per say – they lived in tents and were a bit Nomadic – they moved their flocks to the pastureland was best. This is how they grew the livelihood.

I think moving homes could be stressful. I do think moving can mean more than simply taking all my stuff loading it into a truck and moving somewhere else. Moving can also mean I’m not still where I was 10 years ago. I’m moving from that season of life into a new season of life. I’m still reading, listening and growing. I’m “moving forward” instead of being stagnant and standing still.  I do love the home I live in and I could certainly afford to move to a new home, but I am so content to keep moving forward and growing while continuing to live in the same location for nearly 24 years.  Moving and growing is part of our lives here on earth. This life is not all that we’re moving through. I think we are moving toward eternal life with our God. I think it’s wise to keep that destination in mind every day.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
