Name

I know that there are other people who have the same name as me. I looked up the name I go by (Dwayne) on www.sheknows.comand it evidently means: song. I figured my Mom and Dad just liked that name. Evidently is Irish or Celtic background, which may explain why I like Celtic music! J

Our name is of value to us, or at least is should be. My name is associated with what people think of me. If we’ve had a disagreement, my name may be “mud”. If we connected at some level, there may be some respect associated with my name. I know lots of people and it’s hard to remember each person’s name.

Abram and his wife Sarai are about to have a name change given to them by God.

1When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.”

At this, Abram fell face down on the ground. Then God said to him, “This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations! What’s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham, for you will be the father of many nations. I will make you extremely fruitful. Your descendants will become many nations, and kings will be among them!

15 Then God said to Abraham, “Regarding Sarai, your wife—her name will no longer be Sarai. From now on her name will be Sarah. 16 And I will bless her and give you a son from her! Yes, I will bless her richly, and she will become the mother of many nations. Kings of nations will be among her descendants.”(Genesis 17:1-6; 15-16 NLT)

I wear the name “Christian” which to me, means “Christ Follower”. I want to live a life of discipleship to Jesus, the Son of God. I want my name to be associated with godliness, honorable and honest. I love what Solomon said in Proverbs about a good “name”.  Check this out….

Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold. (Proverbs 22:1 NLT)

My name is my reputation. I will be building on my reputation for the rest of my life. The Lord knows my stupid thoughts, choices and ideas that would destroy my reputation. I don’t want to just build my reputation for my name, but for His Name. I am His.  He has my heart. I want to be known as a devoted follower of Jesus above all else. His name is above every name. To follow Him is the highest calling.

Pressing On

Dwayne
