Mission

I used to watch Mission Impossible (the TV show) when I was a kid. The team would receive the mission and then the message would self-destruct.  I’m always interested in WWII Missions as well. There is usually a lot of planning involved in a mission. “A mission is simply a task that has been assigned or has already begun.”

Jesus was on mission. He began His ministry by choosing followers to lead and teach. He was preparing them to take up His mission after He was gone.  It took a minute for them to realize the “big picture” of Jesus’ mission. Check this out….

35 Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray. 36 Later Simon and the others went out to find him. 37 When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.”

38 But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.” 39 So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons. (Mark 1:35-39 NLT)

I love how Jesus started His day with prayer. I believe that this can bring clarity to the mission of the day ahead. I think early morning prayer can bring perspective as well. Jesus’ mission was HUGE! His mission was to reach the whole world with the message of salvation. He wanted to reconnect the people of the world to their Creator – His Father.

Several years ago, people in business world started talking about mission statements and how valuable they were to lead an organization. Churches got into the act as well. I remember thinking that Jesus gave the church a mission statement.  It’s right there at the end of Matthew’s gospel. Our church took that and simplified to: “Make disciples who make disciples.”

A few years ago, I began working on a mission statement that would guide me in my real estate business. I have it on my desk where I can see it every day. I want others to know my heart and how I serve.

I want to start each day with the Lord clarifying my mission. I need His help. I need His counsel. I need His Presence in me.  If the Lord is not my Leader, then I’m lost. I am following His lead with my life and mission. My mission is His mission.

Pressing On!
