Mercy
I have been the recipient of mercy more times than I can count. When I was younger and bit more clueless, I was given mercy. I still need mercy even though I’m a good bit older. I don’t think I will ever get to a place where I have enough mercy. Mercy is a gift from God like grace. I deserve punishment for my choices and my behavior, but God forgives and shows me great compassion. His love and mercy have no boundaries and that blows my mind.
As I was navigating through Romans, I came across a short passage that connects back to Exodus in discussing God’s mercy. Check this out…
14 Are we saying, then, that God was unfair? Of course not! 15 For God said to Moses,
“I will show mercy to anyone I choose,
and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.”
16 So it is God who decides to show mercy. We can neither choose it nor work for it. (Romans 9:14-16 NLT)
Mercy is God’s option. There are times when I’m dealing with another person that I have the option of displaying mercy. “Mercy is compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it’s within one’s power to punish or harm.”
Because of the incredible mercy that God shows me, I should become full of mercy toward others. Mercy is part of God’s DNA and should be part of my DNA too!
There’s a song with a line in the chorus that is speaking to my soul about mercy.
“I Am Your Beloved” by Jonathan David & Melissa Helser
I am Your beloved
You have bought me with Your blood
And on Your hand
You’ve written out my name
I am Your beloved
One the Father loves
Mercy has defeated all my shame
22 The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
His mercies never cease.
23 Great is his faithfulness;
his mercies begin afresh each morning. (Lamentations 3:22-23 NLT)
Pressing On!
