Lying Lips

I remember people telling me that you can tell if a “used car salesman” is lying if his lips are moving. The implication is that he’s always lying. The truth is there are lots of lies told each day that are pretty simple and subtle. “I’ve never done that”; “Of course those jeans don’t make you look fat”; “I would never do anything to hurt you”; “I know how you feel”. Our words sometimes come out of our mouth before our brain can properly analyze to make sure we are speaking truth. We often say what the person wants to hear instead of the truth. This is dangerous territory because saying what a person wants to hear can be very destructive to the relationship. The Lord wants me to be honest in my relationship with Him. He can tell when I’m lying. He knows my heart. He definitely knows if what is coming from my mouth is really coming from my heart. Check this out…

13 The Lord says:

‘These people come near to me with their mouth

    and honor me with their lips,

    but their hearts are far from me.

Their worship of me

    is based on merely human rules they have been taught.

14 Therefore once more I will astound these people

    with wonder upon wonder;

the wisdom of the wise will perish,

    the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.’

15 Woe to those who go to great depths

    to hide their plans from the Lord,

who do their work in darkness and think,

    ‘Who sees us? Who will know?’

16 You turn things upside down,

    as if the potter were thought to be like the clay!

Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it,

    ‘You did not make me’?

Can the pot say to the potter,

    ‘You know nothing’? (Isaiah 29:13-16 NIV)

 

I’m not sure why I would ever try to trick the Lord. He designed me. He built me. He wired me. He put His Spirit in me. He gives me life. He gives me choice. He gives me love that I can’t comprehend or understand. He gave His One and Only Son to cover my sin. He wired me to worship Him. He gave me words so that I could praise Him. He gave me love so that I could love. God wants me to honestly love Him and honestly love others. He wants the words from my mouth to be honest and from my heart not a bunch of fluff and hollow compliments. I need to check my words today and make sure they are true and honest – especially my words of praise to the Lord.
