Idols Are Idiots

idolsI used to think that people who had little wooded idols were absolutely stupid – I still think that. I’m not a believer in Karma, Gnomes, Astrology, etc. I believe in the God of the Bible, the One True God. He created all that I see and know. I don’t understand how people can take a carving and give it power over them. I honestly don’t know many people at all who bow to those types of idols. I have been known to worship a different type of idol, which is just as stupid. First, check this out….

1 Not to us, Lord, not to us

but to your name be the glory,

because of your love and faithfulness.
2 Why do the nations say,

    “Where is their God?”
3 Our God is in heaven;

   he does whatever pleases him.
4 But their idols are silver and gold,

    made by human hands.
5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,

    eyes, but cannot see.
6 They have ears, but cannot hear,

    noses, but cannot smell.
7 They have hands, but cannot feel,

    feet, but cannot walk,

nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
8 Those who make them will be like them,

and so will all who trust in them. (Psalm 115:1-8 NIV)

There are many gods I find myself serving if I’m not careful and conscious of their power. They are many and quite diverse:

the god of food

the god of sex

the god of entertainment

the god of success

the god of money

the god of achievement

the god of romance

the god of family

the god of time

(from “gods at war” by Kyle Idleman)

These gods battle daily to rule and reign in my heart. These are not little wooden or gold statues, but possibly way more dangerous because they are so sneaky and subtle.  I am nothing without the presence of God in me. He created me for fellowship and service to Himself and others. I am at my best when because of Him, I serve others.

I need to guard my heart against the gods, by filling my heart with more of God’s Presence. His Spirit longs to dwell within me and facilitate me living my life to please the Lord. I don’t want to be an idiot and let these idols rule and reign in me.

Pressing On!
Dwayne
