Humble

I remember the line in a song that says: “Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble when you’re perfect in every way” by Mac Davis. This song was release in 1974 if you care about such things. Only people who are at least as old as I am remember the country star and his variety show. I was a big fan back in my teens. He put into a song what some of us think about. I am guilty of thinking way more highly of myself than I ought. When I keep a proper perspective about Who God is and see Him as the Source of any success or notoriety that I might have – it’s easier to be humble.

King David has a way of putting things in proper perspective. His view of God kept him humble. Check this out…

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you set in place—
what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?
Yet you made them only a little lower than God
and crowned them with glory and honor. (Psalm 8:1,3-5 NLT)

My view of God fuels the humility I feel when I come before Him. I am imperfect and He is perfect. I am self-serving and He serves.  I am self-centered and He is patient as I figure out that my life is not really about me.  My life is meant to bring honor to Him. He forgives me time and again.

James, the half-brother of Jesus reminds us to humble ourselves before Him. Check this out….

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. (James 4:7-10 NLT)

The opposite of humble is prideful.  I want to lay down my pride at the feet of Jesus. I want to honor Him in my humility. If I am anything, it’s because of His Spirit in me. I want my life to reflect my love for Him and my service to Him. In my humility, I want God to be honored and noticed. He is Creator. He is King of Kings. He is God Almighty. He is Counselor. He is Lord of All. I’m just Dwayne – a child of the King.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
