Historical Generosity

I can remember when others were kind and generous to me. I also remember when others were “tight fisted” toward me. When I pause to remember my journey, it softens my heart to others who are on a similar path. I’ve been especially reminded of this as I started teaching Georgia Real Estate Pre-License. There is so much to learn before taking the state exam. It can be overwhelming. I will be a more patient and generous instructor when I remember when I was on the same journey years ago.

I still remember what it was like being broke. I believe “broke” is a state of my bank account. “Poor”, on the other hand, is a state of my mind. I don’t want to be poor or broke. It makes me a more generous person if I remember what it was like.

Moses gave the Israelites instructions about being generous and connected it to the time they were slaves in Egypt. Check this out….

14 “Never take advantage of poor and destitute laborers, whether they are fellow Israelites or foreigners living in your towns. 15 You must pay them their wages each day before sunset because they are poor and are counting on it. If you don’t, they might cry out to the Lord against you, and it would be counted against you as sin.

17 “True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt. 18 Always remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God redeemed you from your slavery. That is why I have given you this command. (Deuteronomy 24:14-15,17-18 NLT)

I believe that the Lord blesses generous people.

I believe generosity comes from inside my heart.

I believe generous people have a good memory about what it’s like to be broke.

Generosity comes from a heart full of gratitude. I’m also generous to others because of the Lord’s generosity toward me. I am never more like God than when I give. He gave His One and Only Son that I might have life abundant and life eternal. That gift from God screams out generosity – I need to remember that and always be generous.

Pressing On!
