Hearing Test

A few years ago, I was introduced to the Mosquito Ring Tone. I have failed miserably at this. You can test your hearing here. I must confess that I’ve been guilty of listening to loud music a bit too much. Some of my hearing loss is because of my age. I was in a crowd of young youth workers years ago and we started listening to the tones and taking a seat when we could no longer hear the sounds coming from the main speakers.  I went to the doctor for a hearing test a few years ago and learned that I do have some hearing loss mostly in my right ear. Recently, I’ve noticed that my hearing is definitely not improving.

There is physical hearing and spiritual hearing.  I want to hear from the Lord, and it has little or nothing to do with my actual ears. I want to hear Him speak to me through His Word. I do want to hear Him speak through others as well.

As I’m reading through Job, his friends push on him very hard regarding his willingness to admit that he has sinned against the Lord.  He maintains that he did nothing to deserve the suffering that he’s endured. The youngest of his friends waits his turn and goes last – he’s a bit brutal toward Job. Check this out….

1Then Elihu said:

“Listen to me, you wise men.
    Pay attention, you who have knowledge.
Job said, ‘The ear tests the words it hears
    just as the mouth distinguishes between foods.’
So let us discern for ourselves what is right;
    let us learn together what is good. (Job 34:1-4 NLT)

I love the comparison that is made between hearing and tastes. This points to our appetites. I have an appetite for food, and I have an appetite for things I hear. I would be wise to manage both appetites with some boundaries and self-discipline.

I remember the phrase, “what you’re doing speaks so loudly that I can’t hear what you’re saying”.  My actions speak volumes about my appetites. No one makes me eat unhealthy things.  No one makes me listen to some of the things I choose to listen to.

I have a responsibility before the Lord to listen to Him and then act upon what I hear. The hearing test that the Lord administers it considerably different than one from my doctor. The Lord speaks through His Word to my heart. I want to be an avid listener to hear and understand what the Lord has to say to me.

I believe that the hearing tests that the Lord administers happens daily – it is not one single event. He tests my hearing multiple times daily. I’d be wise to tune into to hear Him as well as to act upon what I hear from Him.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
