Girl Dad

I am so blessed to be a Dad to a sweet daughter. I am Dad to 4 boys and 1 girl. I’m not sure I can explain it the bond I have with my daughter. It’s not that I love my sons less, it’s just different. Some of my dear friends have only daughters and I feel for them a bit with all the estrogen in their house when the girls grow up!  I think one of my favorite things on earth has been the privilege of being a parent to my children. I feel like I’ve learned more about the Lord through parenthood than any other way. My relationship with all my children and grandchildren is very important to me. I now have 3 daughters thanks to the marriages of my two oldest sons. I love my  grandchildren more than words can articulate. My relationship with the girls is quite different, but in a good way.

When the people of Israel were about to enter the land promised to them by God, the great, great granddaughters of Joseph had a special request. Check this out….

However, Zelophehad, a descendant of Hepher son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, had no sons. He had only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. These women came to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us a grant of land along with the men of our tribe.”

So Joshua gave them a grant of land along with their uncles, as the Lord had commanded. (Joshua 17:3-4 NLT)

I think it’s cool how all of this unfolded. These women had approached Moses in anticipation of this happening when they got into the promised land and now that the land was being divided by Joshua, they stepped up once again to remind Joshua of the decision of Moses and obviously the Lord as well. These ladies indeed got land in the name of their Dad.

As a girl Dad – I’m always a bit more protective of my daughter. I also love the fact that she is dependent upon the Lord to lead her life and give her direction each day. It’s sometimes hard when I have an idea that differs from what she feels led by the Lord to do. I’m thankful that she grew up learning the Lord’s directions trumps my directions every time. While I’m her Dad here on earth, our heavenly Dad is also our Creator. He can overrule me anytime. In fact, I don’t ever want to give counsel that contradicts His counsel.

To be a great parent, I think it’s important to be a humble, obedient child of the King first. When I lead and teach my children as a child of God, I’m more effective and the Lord adds His blessing to that level of parenting. I’m thankful to be a boy-Dad and a girl-Dad!

Pressing On!

Dwayne
