Generous

This is a good word that means: “liberal in giving or sharing; unselfish”. I try to live my life being generous with my time, talent and treasure to others. There are times when I’ve given out of obligation or pressure. Generosity is not as fun when it’s expected, or I feel obligated. I think generosity should flow out of a heart of gratitude. Cicero said that “Gratitude is not only the greatest of all virtues; it is the parent of the others”.

The people of Israel, after fleeing Egypt and miraculously coming through the Red Sea on dry land, are camped at Sinai. Moses is on the mountain receiving the law.  Right before the Lord gives details about the Ark of the Covenant, He instructs Moses regarding the generosity of the people. Check this out….

1The Lord said to Moses, “Tell the people of Israel to bring me their sacred offerings. Accept the contributions from all whose hearts are moved to offer them. (Exodus 25:1-2 NLT)

I’ve given without a generous heart before.

I’ve given with a self-centered heart.

I’ve given with a humble heart before.

I’ve given out of love and respect.

I’ve given because I’m blessed.

I’ve given because I’ve felt guilty.

When I give from a heart moved with gratitude, it is an amazing experience to be generous. I believe I’m most like the Father when I give.  Check this out…

16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 NLT)

Generosity should come from gratitude, which is the parent of all virtues!

Pressing On!
