Every Promise

I’m made promises over the years that I’ve struggled to keep. I’ve learned the value of keeping promises. Keeping promises speaks to integrity of character and trust. If I say I’m planning to do something, you can bank on it. I sometimes break promises to myself. I decide that I’m going to eat smarter and healthier and then I really want that piece of fudge or cake. I break promises to myself way more than I ever did to other people. A promise is a declaration that something will or will not be done. A promise made should be a promise kept. I started making “smaller” promises to myself. I’ve made a commitment to get healthy which means exercise and better eating habits. I’ve even asked for some friends to pray for me as I work at keeping this promise to myself.

I’m pretty confident that David penned the Psalm I read this morning that reminded me that God’ keeps every promise. Check this out….

Praise the Lord!

Let all that I am praise the Lord.
    I will praise the Lord as long as I live.
    I will sing praises to my God with my dying breath.

Don’t put your confidence in powerful people;
    there is no help for you there.
When they breathe their last, they return to the earth,
    and all their plans die with them.
But joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper,
    whose hope is in the Lord their God.
He made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and everything in them.
    He keeps every promise forever.(Psalm 146:1-6 NLT)

I should only make promises that I fully intend to keep. I should only make promises that I can actually control. I can’t control the length of my life or the length of anyone else’s life. I can only control certain parts of my own life and that control ultimately belongs to Him.

The Lord makes promises that are bold. The Lord makes promises that only He could keep. He promises to never leave me. He promises to love me forever. He promises mercy and grace. He promises eternal life. He promises abundant life. He promises His Presence in me. His promises come without condition or “strings attached”. I plan to stand on His Promises until my last breath here on earth.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
