Daily Bible Reading

I like getting up early and spending some time with the Lord in His Word. I feel like during this time of reading His Word, He always speaks into my heart through His Word. I feel like I learn more about Him and more of Him. I believe this time each morning has shaped my life and even changed the trajectory of my life in powerful ways.

I was reading Moses instructions to the people for when they choose a king. I’m didn’t remember this passage before, which happens when re-reading His Word. I found it interesting that King Solomon broke most of these instructions for a king. He became a wealthy king and had many wives, which lead to Solomon’s falling away from God. This instruction for a king is good instruction for me too. Check this out….

18 “When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. 19 He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees. 20 This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:18-20 NLT)

I see some really helpful application from this passage regarding reading the Word of God daily.

  1. Daily Bible reading can develop humility. I realize how big God is and how small I am. His Word gives me perspective.
  2. I am reminded of how I should live. I am tempted to turn away, but I remember His truth and let this drive my daily decisions.
  3. The Lord speaks to me in a new and fresh way sometimes, when I read a passage that I’ve read many times before.

The Word of God has power to help shape my heart, decisions and my entire life. I must listen carefully to the Words I’m reading and the Spirit speaking into my heart. I don’t want to think that I’m somebody special or better than anyone else because of my time with the Lord in His Word, but I can tell the world that this daily walk has transformed my life. I believe if others take the time to start their day with the Lord, they have access to the same instructions, peace, perspective and hope that I have.

Pressing On!
