Compliment

A compliment is an “expression of praise, commendation or admiration”. (www.dictionary.com) I enjoy receiving compliments from people who are close to me. Check that: I like receiving compliments from just about anyone. I really enjoy receiving compliments from people I admire and respect deeply.

A compliment means that someone noticed something. There was an attribute, action or a simple characteristic that was noticed and brought to the forefront.

King Solomon is the author of Song of Songs, which has a romantic feel to it for sure. There are principles that I believe can be applied to lots of relationships – from friends to my spouse and everyone in between. Check this out….

If you don’t know, O most beautiful woman,
follow the trail of my flock,
and graze your young goats by the shepherds’ tents.
You are as exciting, my darling,
as a mare among Pharaoh’s stallions.
10 How lovely are your cheeks;
    your earrings set them afire!
How lovely is your neck,
enhanced by a string of jewels.
11 We will make for you earrings of gold
and beads of silver. (Song of Songs 1:8-11 NLT)

A genuine compliment is fresh air to my soul.

A genuine compliment is very encouraging.

A fake compliment is empty and awkward. I’ve complimented people and didn’t really mean it – that’s called lying.  I can remember my mom telling me when I was young: “if you can’t something good about someone, say nothing at all”. I’ve tried to weigh my words more carefully recently and be genuine. If I really think about it, I can something good to compliment almost anyone I meet today. I’ve complimented someone on the color of the shirt their wearing or how their hair looks.

I believe a genuine well-placed compliment can deepen a relationship. I always have room to improve in this area. I sometimes think about a compliment and then don’t share it. I’m determined to improve this area of my relationships, starting with my wife. I could write a book of compliments to her that would absolutely bless her profoundly, but for some reason, I’ve kept them only in my thoughts.

A compliment not shared isn’t a compliment at all. It costs me nothing, but is worth more than loads of money and material possessions.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
