Church
I’ve gone to church for as long as I can remember. Sunday’s were a special day where the whole family went to church together. My first church that I remember was a small church called Roley Christian Church in Casey Creek, KY. Yes you could say it was a country church. I lived off the faith of my family and many good neighbors who were part of that church fellowship. I had some great Sunday School teachers and the preachers (aka pastors) were a huge influence on me. There is something powerful that happens when I go to church. I realize that all these other people are imperfect like me. All of us imperfect people are not content to stay imperfect though, we know of One Who was perfect. At church I find others in need of redemption and others in need of grace. I thought about church this morning when I read this Psalm of King David. Check this out….
1 I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” 2 Our feet are standing in your gates, Jerusalem. 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you be secure. 7 May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.” 8 For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you.” 9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your prosperity. (Psalm 122:1-2;6-9 NIV)
There have been times in my life when going to church was drudgery and work. Church can become political with power players in leadership and people who are simply consumed with themselves and their own wants and wishes. The church can easily get “off mission” which is to equip and encourage believers and reach people who don’t know Jesus. I will be the first to admit that “one size doesn’t fit all” might apply to church. I believe that the church should be an amazing fellowship of followers of God who display His characteristics to others. I get really frustrated and disgusted when church people have a different agenda than that. When I don’t think I need grace I’m not as inclined to dispense grace to others. I need to be part of a vibrant body of believers who dispense love and grace in large doses and teach truth without apology.
