Angels

I grew up seeing pictures of angels with big wings and all decked out in white. I’ve also seen that “special glow” about them. When I was a lot younger, there was a show called “Touched By An Angel” that was really cool to watch. I’m not sure if I’ve ever encountered an angel before – at least I wasn’t sure of it. I have met people who are absolutely convinced of meeting angels or being helped by an angel. The Bible actually supports that belief to an extent.

In the Old Testament we see references of angels all the time. Some scholars and theologians believe that when there is a reference to “The Angel Of The Lord” that the reference is actually about Jesus, The Son of God active in leading the people of God. As they people of Israel were getting ready to move toward the promised land of Canaan, the Lord handed down the 10 Commandments along with some other guidelines for them to follow. During those instructions He tells them about an Angel. Check this out…

20 ‘See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. 22 If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. (Exodus 23:20-22 NIV)

The New Testament is chocked full of references to the presence of angels in our world. I actually embrace a spiritual realm where angels and demons move and work. I think of it as just beyond my ability to see. I can’t see blue tooth signals, FM signals or any other radio frequency, but they are there and they are invisible to the human eye. I also believe that God is still God in the spiritual realm and I believe that the prayers and petitions of God’s people have great influence in the spiritual realm as well as the physical realm. I have never really been “creeped out” by any of this, because scripture speaks to the presence of angels and demons. The writer of Hebrews speaks to the presence of angels too. Check this out…

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. (Hebrews 13:2 NIV)

I believe in God and I believe that we all need Jesus as our Savior. I also believe that God created the heavens and the earth and that if He wants angels among us, He can make that happen. There are so many days when I need all the help I can get and I’d be thrilled to have help from the spiritual realm and the physical realm. I talk to the Lord every day and ask Him for guidance and help, I feel pretty confident that there have been many times when an angel assisted me. I know that His Spirit definitely speaks into me and helps me with decisions that I face. I might be a bit more aware of the presence of angels today.

Pressing On!
