Morning Pray At Beautiful LandscapeI must say that the book of Revelation is quite a unique book of the Bible. It is filled with symbolism and wild descriptive creatures that take some imagination. It sometimes makes me laugh to think how I might describe what John is trying to describe. These creatures seem like something out of a sci-fi movie. John is seeing things that he has never seen before and is trying to describe them in terms of his life experiences and his culture. I do believe that the things we see in heaven will be beyond describing so I’m giving the brother a break as I read this one-of-a-kind book.

The scene is worship. There are creatures that are weird looking in heaven and there are 24 Elders surrounding the throne. The Son of God is on the throne – bright and colorful beyond describing. Worship breaks out often. Check this out…

Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to the one seated on the throne, the one who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before the one seated on the throne and worship the one who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne and say,

11 Our Lord and God,
you are worthy to receive
glory and honor and power,
because you have created all things,
and by your will
they exist and were created. (Revelation 4:9-11CSB)

I am pushed back in my chair this morning as I visualize this scene. John had spent personal one-on-one time with Jesus while He walked the earth. Someone beyond description was now in front. He was seeing Jesus in splendor and majesty. I wonder if John was remembering the blind man healed or the lame guy walking after meeting Jesus. I wonder if John was remembering Lazarus who was brought back from the dead. I wonder if John was remembering the scene at the foot of the cross with Jesus’ mother. John had to be blown away with the scene, but he understood the words as the 24 elders worshiped. The Lord is so worthy of my worship.

Co-Worker With Truth

four hands isolated on whiteOver the years, I’ve been part of teams, staffs, ministries, partnerships & missions. I remember collecting old pairs of glasses for people in Africa who didn’t have access to glasses. The missionary there was trying to help them with something as simple as seeing and being able to read. I’ve partnered with mission teams to build wells so that a community could have something as basic as fresh water available. When I participate in those types of “fund raisers”, I realize just how blessed I am to have opportunity and access to so many resources that make my life easier.

John was writing to one of his good friends in the church. He was commending him for his hospitality and generosity. Check this out…

Dear friend, you are acting faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers and sisters, especially when they are strangers. They have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God, since they set out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from pagans. Therefore, we ought to support such people so that we can be coworkers with the truth. (3 John 1:5-8 CSB)

It dawned on me this morning that when I help a missionary with resources for his or her ministry, I became a co-worker with the truth. I was in fact a partner with their hands-on ministry taking place half-way around the world. This can be significant. I can be generous and affect change in people’s lives that I will never meet. I can be the hands and feet of Jesus from right here where I live.

I am thankful that my path crossed paths with Michael & Lisa Perkins over 8 years ago. They are missionaries in Nicaragua. They sold their restaurant and walked away from their “normal” American life in Oregon around 12 years ago to accept God’s call upon their live to serve Him and share the Gospel in Nicaragua. I got to know them well as they began serving us as we pursued adoption process spearheaded by our Pastor Shannon Lovelady and his wife Natasha. The journey had so many obstacles, twists and turns and Michael and Lisa prayed with us and connected us to the right people in Nicaragua. In just over 1 year from when the first conversation happened about adopting 5 kids from Nicaragua, four families from our church came home with the five kids. We are forever connected and co-workers with The Mustard Seed Mission in Managua, Nicaragua! This passage reminded me that I’m a co-worker with them in the truth!

I’m so thankful that the Lord is writing a new chapter for the restaurant that they sold in Oregon many years ago, it was called The Mustard Seed Café. That is the name of the new restaurant here in Carrollton, GA that will be at City Station. Their mission in Nicaragua will continue as we broaden our relationship with Mustard Seed Missions and Mustard Seed Café. The Lord has really expanded the whole concept of “Co-Workers with the Truth”!

I want to encourage every believer who reads these words to become a Co-Worker with Truth. Get involved with a bible teaching church. Get involved with bible teaching missionaries. It is very fulfilling to think about serving and giving to people you will possibly never meet in the name of Jesus. Who knows, maybe we’ll meet them in heaven one day – How cool would that be?

A Prayer For City Station

Man praying with the BibleI am blessed to be part of Southern Hills Christian Church. Our church is in the process of building City Station (www.citystation.org) in Carrollton, GA. Our church is made up of millionaires, the poorest people, ex-convicts, attorneys, doctors, truck drivers, REALTORS, factory works – you name the demographic and we have them. We have white, black people, Hispanic among others. Our church has people from all sorts of spiritual backgrounds as well. We are quite a mix of our culture in general, which is what I think church should look like. Our community is made up of many different cultures and that is reflected in our church. (A 5 minute video about City Station)

The foundation of the building is being installed now. The building is set to open in May 2018. City Station will feature a gymnasium that will serve as our gathering room for worship on the weekend. It will also feature a restaurant (not sure what type of food yet) that will offer healthy food options. We will also have a pre-school during the week and the rooms will double as rooms for our children’s ministry during the weekend services. City Station features covenant student housing for University of West Georgia students (60 students). Our fitness center will feature a great work-out facility complete with fitness classes and training. We offer Biblical Counseling (aka Soul Care) and there will be meeting rooms available for that ministry. Our staff offices will be there as well. There will be lots of common space to meet and connect with others. Southern Hills Christian Church will be the church who meets at City Station.

I think this is an excellent prayer to pray on behalf of every church that introduces people to Jesus. I believe that church should be a place where misfits and idiots can meet Jesus and change the course of their lives. Before I met Him, I was on a crash course for hell. Because of what He did, I now have confidence of my eternal home in heaven. The gospel is simple – make Jesus Lord of my heart and He changes everything else. It may be simple, but it’s not necessarily easy to live out.

As you read this short blog – I pray that you might get interested in knowing Jesus and surrendering your heart to His way and His will for you. It’s a journey NOT a destination. There are many church who are biblically sound in teaching – find one and connect. The church is not meant to be a club of Christians, rather it’s to be a lab where we honestly live out our faith, helping one another along.

Body Parts

 

Vocabulary worksheetI have lived long enough to know that there are some parts of my body that I can live without and other parts that necessary. For example, I could live without my eyes if I had to. I could also live without my ears – but I don’t want to. My eyes and ears get a lot of attention and rightly so because of their function, but they aren’t as important as my stomach, kidneys or heart. I can’t see any of these parts, but I know they are working because I’m alive to type out this simple little blog.

The apostle Paul writes to the church at Corinth to explain the parts of the church, the body of Christ and how important each member is. We all are gifted way differently, but we all have similar parts of our own bodies. Check this out…

18 But as it is, God has arranged each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted. 19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” Or again, the head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that are weaker are indispensable. 23 And those parts of the body that we consider less honorable, we clothe these with greater honor, and our unrespectable parts are treated with greater respect, 24 which our respectable parts do not need.

Instead, God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the less honorable, 25 so that there would be no division in the body, but that the members would have the same concern for each other. 26 So if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. (1 Corinthians 12:18-26 CSB)

I don’t really think a whole lot about my stomach until it gets upset – then that’s all I think about until it settles down. I don’t think about my kidneys until they get an infection. I think it’s important to be aware of my whole body, not just my skin, face, hair, eyes, hands, feet, etc… My body is complex and very detailed just as the church is complex and detailed. I need to look at the church differently. If the beautiful parts get all the attention, what about the unseen parts? I need to notice every part of the body. I need to care for the invisible yet vital parts as well as the parts that I could live without. It’s very complex and complicated, but also simple – I need others and others need me – The body parts of the church are vital to impact the world for Jesus.

No Strings Attached

 

I am always suspicious of an unsolicited phone call announcing that I’ve received something for free. I realize that there is a “catch” to things like that. I have won 3 days and 3 nights at a nice resort only to find out that I had to go to a meeting where they try to sell you a time share in that resort. I’ve also been offered a free 6-month subscription only to find out that they will start billing me automatically after that first 6 months. There are many gimmicks that promise something Free that I am a bit jaded about it. I usually say that something that is free to me always cost someone else something. There is no such thing as a free lunch. After reading in the Word this morning, I realize that there is something that is free. Check this out…

If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame, 12 since there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord of all richly blesses all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:9-13 CSB)

I have not done anything to deserve the love from God that I’ve experienced. He doesn’t love me because I love Him. He loved me first. He loves me even when I don’t love Him. I can’t quite wrap my head around that level of love. I have accepted Him as my Lord. I do believe in Him. I don’t deserve His love. I don’t deserve to be saved, but I am profoundly grateful.

I used to think going to church made me a Christian.

I used to think that not cursing made me a Christian.

I used to think that obeying my parents made me a Christian.

That could be a long list of what I used to think. I understand now that I go to church; guard my tongue, honor my parents BECAUSE I’m a Christ follower NOT to become a Christ follower. I am a Christian because I have surrendered my heart to the Lord. I believe in God. I believe He is the ONLY ONE Who can save me.

Nothing I can do contributes to my being saved. He did it all. I honor Him BECAUSE He has saved me and promised me a future. My life has been different since I figured this out. I can’t do enough or not do enough to be saved. He has that handled. There are no strings attached to my salvation. I see life different since He’s saved my soul. I want to live for Him. I want to live in honor of Him. I want to trust Him in obedience. I want my surrender to Him to continue today not out of fear, but in faith that He will continue to walk with me through this life.

He saved me with no strings attached.

The Lord’s Dwelling Place

Chapel In New EnglandI grew up being taught not to run in church. I was taught to be very respectful of the building where the church met. It was called the Lord’s house. I used to think that the only place you could feel the Presence of God was in the church. Some of this type of thinking is connected to the Old Testament when the Lord dwelled first in a Tabernacle (aka special tent) and then later He dwelled in the Temple. Fast forward to Jesus coming to earth and dying as an innocent man – the veil in the temple separating the Most Holy Place (where God dwelled) & the rest of temple was ripped from top to bottom. It wasn’t just a simple wind storm; this veil was like 4 inches think. I believe the Lord ripped the veil to remove any obstacle so that I could go directly to Him through His Son instead of a priest.

The sons of Korah have written a Psalm about how God loved to dwell among His people. This was before Jesus came. The Lord’s dwelling was in Zion among His people. Check this out…

Glorious things are said of you,
    city of God. (Psalm 87:1-3 NIV)

After Jesus came, the world as it was known changed. Jesus was the “Ultimate High Priest” – He is the ONLY way necessary to have access to God. No spiritual giant (aka priest) or selected leader is necessary – God came to man and His dwelling place is now in the heart of man. This truth blows my mind. God went from the “far off being” to personally living inside my heart. I’m so thankful. He walks with me. He speaks truth into my heart. He directs my path (when I listen). He protects me. He provides for me. He LIVES in me! Check this out…

16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. (Ephesians 3:16-17a NIV)

God’s dwelling place now is not a building made with human hands, it’s inside the hearts of His people who believe in Him; trust in Him and welcome Him in.
