Where I Come From

Kentucky (USA) mapI grew up in a little spot in Adair County Kentucky called Casey Creek. My address growing up was: Dwayne Hicks Casey Creek, KY 42723. Someone in my family went to the post office every day or so and picked up the mail. I’m not sure how many people got mail in that little post office, but the postmaster knew everyone. As I grew up and went to college in Knoxville, TN one our professors loved hearing me talk because of my accent. He would always acknowledge where I was from. I was referred to as “the Hicks from the sticks”! My hometown is not all like it once was. People have moved away and my home church was closed and the building was sold. Being from Casey Creek, KY has somewhat defined parts of me, even today.

As I’ve grown older it’s not so much about where I’m from, where I’m going. I want he Lord to establish me. He can establish me and define who I am. Check this out…

5 Indeed, of Zion it will be said,

“This one and that one were born in her,

and the Most High himself will establish her.”
6 The Lord will write in the register of the peoples:

“This one was born in Zion.”
7 As they make music they will sing,

“All my fountains are in you.” (Psalm 87:5-7 NIV)

Today I live in Lowell, Georgia – a little spot outside of Carrollton. I’m not defined where I’m from as much as who I am today. I am who I am today because of the Lord living in me. He has changed my perspective. He has changed my destination. He has changed my career path. He has changed my family. I am learning to lean on Him as I live where I live and work where I work. He is the One Who gives meaning and direction to my life. God created me for His work to be completed through me. I am actually grateful for where I grew up, but I’m more thankful for what the Lord is building in me today and every day.

I’m a follower of Jesus who was born and raised in Casey Creek, KY. I can learn from my past, but I don’t live there anymore. I now live, laugh, serve and work in and around Carrollton, GA. I love what the Lord has done and is doing in my family and me. He is the holder of my past, present and future!

Pressing On!
Dwayne
