What Do You Want?
I have a list. When people ask me this question, I can usually come up with an answer. “I want what I want, when I want it.” I think if I knew I was speaking with someone who could give me all that I want, I would probably go a bit crazy and ask for a long list of things. I remember as a kid when reading a fairy tale and someone was granted three wishes, I remember thinking I would always ask for three more wishes. I believe at the end of the day; most everyone is naturally selfish. It takes a different mindset to put others wants and needs in front of my own. I think we are more like Jesus when we seek to serve others first and put ourselves in the last place.
King Solomon was asked “What do you want?” by God Himself. God could give the king anything. I love his request because King Solomon put others first. I see his humility and meekness coming through in that answer. Check this out….
7 That night God appeared to Solomon and said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!”
8 Solomon replied to God, “You showed great and faithful love to David, my father, and now you have made me king in his place. 9 O Lord God, please continue to keep your promise to David my father, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth! 10 Give me the wisdom and knowledge to lead them properly, for who could possibly govern this great people of yours?”
11 God said to Solomon, “Because your greatest desire is to help your people, and you did not ask for wealth, riches, fame, or even the death of your enemies or a long life, but rather you asked for wisdom and knowledge to properly govern my people— 12 I will certainly give you the wisdom and knowledge you requested. But I will also give you wealth, riches, and fame such as no other king has had before you or will ever have in the future!” (2 Chronicles 1:7-12 NLT)
I used to crave success, fame and fortune. I heard recently that “success finds you”. I remember hearing Zig Ziglar say, “If you help enough other people get what they want, you’ll get what you want”. I believe that to be true. When I surrendered my life to the Lord, I began asking the Lord what He wants. He wants me to love others. He wants me to serve others. He wants me to seek His heart. He wants me to think like Him and love like Him.
I will continue to seek the wisdom that only the Lord can give. I will lean into Him to help me navigate serving and leading others. My goal is serving Him first by loving and serving others. I believe I will be perceived as successful by Him when I love like Him and serve others because of my love and commitment to Him. I want what He wants.
Pressing On!
