Wandering or Walking

If I have the choice of walking or riding a bike, I will choose the bicycle. I enjoy bike riding, especially on The Carrollton Greenbelt – an 18-mile loop around our city. I am thankful that I can walk and that for the most part, it feels good to walk. Going for a walk is not the same as going wandering around. If I’m going for a walk, I will almost have a definite destination and time frame in mind. If I’m wandering around, I really don’t know where I’m going and I’m certainly not on a time schedule for sure.

King David penned a Psalm when he was with the Philistines – evading King Saul who was trying to kill him. The Philistines were the enemy of the people of Israel and David had actually led the Israelite army to defeat the Philistines on many occasions. For the most part, it’s a safe place to hide for now. I think the Philistines were starting to get a bit anxious about David and whether he was a spy for the Israelites or not. He was beginning to feel unwelcomed there. In fact, he later pretends to be a madman. The Lord knows right where David is and David is under His Protection. Check this out….

You keep track of all my wanderings.
    You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
    You have recorded each one in your book.

My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help.
    This I know: God is on my side!
10 I praise God for what he has promised;
    yes, I praise the Lord for what he has promised.
11 I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
    What can mere mortals do to me?

12 I will fulfill my vows to you, O God,
    and will offer a sacrifice of thanks for your help.
13 For you have rescued me from death;
    you have kept my feet from slipping.
So now I can walk in your presence, O God,
    in your life-giving light. (Psalm 56:8-13 NLT)

I know what it’s like to be walking toward something. Walking is on purpose. Walking is with a plan. I also know what it’s like to wander around. Wandering is without purpose. Wandering is without a plan. The Lord is all about walking with me. I sometimes find myself wandering away from the Lord. I believe it’s wise to know where I’m going today when I wake up. If my day isn’t scheduled properly, I might wander off task. On the other hand, if my goals are written down and with the Lord’s help, a plan is in place – I’m on purpose and on point with my life. The Lord knows all the unexpected visitors or people I’ll bump into along the way today – He is never surprised, but I often am.

I want to walk out my faith today and every day. I want to be steady and consistent in trusting Him with my plans. I want to walk with Him today and every day. I want to keep my wandering to a minimum. I want His help organizing, planning and preparing for my day – every day.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
