Vigilant

iwo jima memorialI picture someone as vigilant as someone who doesn’t rest from protecting and providing. I see soldiers who protect our freedoms as vigilant. I see parents who protect and provide for their children as needing to be vigilant. The word vigilant means: “keenly watchful to detect danger; ever awake and alert”.

I love the story of Caleb. I see him as a vigilant warrior. He has followed the Lord his whole life and he is confident that with the Lord, He can do anything. He was one of the 12 spies sent into Canaan some 45 years earlier. Both he and Joshua felt like Israel could take the land with the Lords help. The other 10 spies instilled fear in the people and they backed down and wandered for 40 years in the desert. Joshua and Caleb were the only two men of their generation to live through the desert. Here they are actually living the dream and taking the land that God had promised. Caleb and Joshua were at least in their 60’s and still strong and ready to fight with the Lord’s help. Check this out….

13 In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah – Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.) 14 From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites – Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, the sons of Anak. (Joshua 15:13-14 NIV)

The Anakites were giants, but Caleb didn’t let that stop him. He knew God who created the Anakites and the Lord could certainly help him drive them out. I just see Caleb as a vigilant keeper of his family. He protects and provides with an intensity that is worth noting.

I would be wise to notice how vigilantly he follows the Lord.

I would be wise to notice how vigilantly he trusts the Lord.

I would be wise to notice how vigilant and brave he is.

I should be brave and trust the Lord with all of my heart. I should not fear when big things come at me because the Creator of all things is my Companion and Friend. He will never leave me or let me go. I trust Him and I’m learning to trust Him more. With Him I have everything, but without Him, I am nothing. I want to vigilantly pursue the heart of God.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
