Truth!
This is a word that seems to have some variations in our culture. There are those who would argue that truth is relative to the situation. I would argue that truth is absolute. I know that this is a high standard to operate under, but the truth usually comes out in the open and reveals lies and dishonesty. Even under the most trying circumstances the truth is ALWAYS the best policy
I learned that there are times when my opinion is asked for and I’m aware of what the other person wants me to say…I must still tell the truth. “Does this dress make me look fat?” is an example. There are some tough situations that call for a little white lie, but the truth is always best. Jeremiah was in a situation where he could have softened the truth with some “white lies”. He’s been falsely accused and spent some time in prison and was brought before the king. Check this out..
17 Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and had him brought to the palace. Zedekiah asked him in private, “Is there any message from the Lord?” Jeremiah answered, “Yes, there is. Zedekiah, you will be handed over to the king of Babylon.” 18 Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What crime have I done against you or your officers or the people of Jerusalem? Why have you thrown me into prison? 19 Where are your prophets that prophesied this message to you: ‘The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land of Judah’? 20 But now, my master, king of Judah, please listen to me, and please do what I ask of you. Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the royal secretary, or I will die there!” (Jeremiah 37:17-20 NCV)Jeremiah spoke the truth even when it could have had bad consequences for himself. The truth is always the best policy, so you don’t have to remember what you said earlier. Honesty is a rare character trait that needs to shout from the lives of Christ followers. I should stand out because I’m honest and straightforward with my words and actions. Unfortunately, in our culture, money changes truth and a lot of other values as well. People will say or do most anything for money, power and fame. Then there’s the truth…still waiting to be heard or found…and it will be found. I would rather be known for honesty and truth than for any other ability or character trait.
