The Belt
This little item is important to my wardrobe. It’s sort of considered an assessor. I’m not really picky about my belt, I just want it to work properly. In fact I’m so easy, I have mainly one belt and it’s reversible – I wear it on the black side with black & gray pants and on the brown side with khakis and jeans. A belt is important to help hold my pants up. It also often holds my cell phone case. For police officers, it holds weapons, handcuffs and possibly their radio. I remember a verse in the Word speaking of a belt of truth. Isaiah speaks to the belt of righteousness. Check this out…
1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord – 3 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash round his waist. (Isaiah 11:1-5 NIV)
I love this foretelling of Jesus coming. Isaiah was quite a prophet and his words prepared the way for the Word of God to be introduced as Jesus. I love how he speaks to the depth of Who Jesus was and how He would serve and work while here. After reading this passage, I began to think of my belt as a reminder that I need to be held up and held together by righteousness and faithfulness. I’m thinking that my undershirt – the one that touches my skin, remind me of being faithful and the belt of righteousness hold my wardrobe together. (Don’t laugh – it’s the little things.)
I really want to live faithful before the Lord. I want my words and activities to be righteous before Him. He is the One Who knows me like no one else.
