Teachable Moment
As my children were growing up, there were many teachable moments along the way. If I wasn’t careful, I could miss them. I’m sure that I did miss some for sure. I believe most parenting is done “along the way” of life. There were teachable moments when a friend was sick. There were teachable moments when an accident occurred, and a life was lost. This could be a long list.
I came across a passage of scripture that had a teachable moment built in for sure. Check this out….
21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). (Mark 15:21-22 NLT)
This guy Simon was in the right place at the right time or the wrong place at the wrong time (whichever way you want to look at it) and his boys were likely with him. He was pressed into serving the Romans just like anyone else. I think it was interesting that his boys were named in scripture. I think the stories that Simon and his boys told about this unforeseen experience likely got them an introduction to the disciples of Jesus.
Many scholars believe that Peter is the source of information behind the book of Mark. He likely got to meet these two boys of Simon of Cyrene to tell them the back story of the cross of Jesus. What looked like a demeaning task, was actually a huge honor. This was certainly a life changing, teachable moment for this family.
I want to look for teachable moments today that the Lord will use to teach me more about Him. His heart is often on display through many circumstances that I will face. As a child of God, I want to notice Him through the moments that make up my life.
Pressing On!
