Speechless

I have been speechless a few times in my life. Those that know me probably can’t imagine that. When there is any combination of shock, fear, surprise, and awe – I’m speechless. I’ve seen and heard some amazing things. I’ve seen some incredible part of God’s creation that left me speechless. In the middle of a speechless moment, the words just won’t come. After things calm and you have time to gain some perspective, the words can once again flow.

I feel like Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were speechless as they simply go to the tomb where Jesus’ body was laid on Friday. The Sabbath day was quiet and uneventful. Sunday came in a big way. Check this out…

Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to visit the tomb.

Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint.

Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying.(Matthew 28:1-6 NLT)

I imagine that the angel saw the look on their faces. The guards had hit the ground. I’ve not knowingly seen an angel. I do believe that they exist. This angel entrance and presence made a strong statement that he was from God.  He delivered some striking news to the women. He addressed the questions that the ladies had before they could even speak.

I think the details of this event as told by Matthew are interesting. The ladies obviously told Him what happened that morning. I think it’s helpful to retell events where I’ve been speechless. They are meaningful and impactful upon me.

I’ve been speechless in the middle of a time of worship.

I’ve been speechless at the birth of my children.

I’ve been speechless at the loss of a loved one.

My speechlessness doesn’t last super long, and perspective follows.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
