Song
There is something special about a song. In any culture a song is a unique tool to communicate just about anything. When I think about songs, I’m usually thinking of music included. There are some songs that simply are music and others that are simply words. A good song has a message that stays with me for hours and sometimes days on end. I’ve been a follower of Jesus since I was really young and I can quickly recall old hymns or songs that we sang in church as a kid. There are classic songs that take me back to a place in time where I first heard that song. Music and song together become a powerful way to communicate or remember truth.
The Lord gave Moses a song right near the end of his life. He took his protégé Joshua, the heir to leadership and delivered this song to all the people. This song was not three verses and a chorus. I really liked the introduction of the song. Check this out…
1 Listen, you heavens, and I will speak;
hear, you earth, the words of my mouth.
2 Let my teaching fall like rain
and my words descend like dew,
like showers on new grass,
like abundant rain on tender plants.
3 I will proclaim the name of the Lord.
Oh, praise the greatness of our God!
4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect,
and all his ways are just.
A faithful God who does no wrong,
upright and just is he. (Deuteronomy 32:1-4 NIV)
I listen to music quite frequently. I recently connected to Apple music so that I can listen to pretty much any music that is released without purchasing an entire full length CD.
I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to be part of a Steven Curtis Chapman concert. I remembered listening and being blessed by his music over 25 years ago. (That sometimes seems like a lifetime ago.) His music pointed my heart to the heart of God way back then and still does today.
I can also listen to a song from my teen-age years and my mind takes me back to a different place and time. Music & Song has tremendous power and input to my heart. I have to be wise and discerning about what songs I listen too and which ones I skip. I should choose music and song carefully so that my values are encouraged and not assaulted.
Pressing On!
