Snakes
I must admit that I really hate snakes. I’m not a fan of even good snakes. I heard a friend just yesterday say that “there are only two kinds of snakes – cobra and chicken snakes…and if he comes upon a snake and it doesn’t have a chicken in its mouth, then it must be a cobra and he kills it!” Snakes really creep me out. They crawl around and sneak around – I really don’t like snakes at all. King David compares wicked people to snakes, which isn’t a bad analogy at all. Check this out…
3 Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies. 4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears, 5 that will not heed the tune of the charmer, however skillful the enchanter may be. (Psalm 58:3-5 NIV)
I heard a guy refer to a businessman once as a snake in the grass. I knew immediately that it wasn’t a compliment. As I read this Psalm today, I felt like David was frustrated beyond words with wicked people in leadership positions. Corrupt leadership is extremely frustrating. We are coming upon primary elections here where I live and there are people running for leadership positions that simply want power and there are others who simply want to serve. At the end of the day, I want to always lead and serve with Christ at the center of my heart. I want the activities of my life to reflect a heart of love and mercy like the one the Lord has. I don’t ever want any association with “snakes in the grass” at all. I don’t want to be naïve an pretend they aren’t there, I just don’t ever want to join them.
Pressing On! Dwayne
