Sleep On It
I grew up with a bit of a fiery temperament. For the most part, I’m very mild-mannered and calm. I do have buttons that can be pushed for sure. You can ask those closest to me what they are, and they will tell you. I will sometimes use the word “frustrated” to soften the fact that I’m really angry. I learned a few years ago how much emotions, including anger, cloud my judgement. I have learned to take a step back and let my emotions cool down a bit before proceeding. I wish it were this way every time, but unfortunately it isn’t. There are times when a quick “audible” is called for and my anger can cause an impulsive mistake. I have lots of work yet to do on this issue.
King David wrote to his choir director a cool Psalm that “popped me in the nose” this morning. Check this out….
4 Don’t sin by letting anger control you.
Think about it overnight and remain silent.
5 Offer sacrifices in the right spirit,
and trust the Lord.
6 Many people say, “Who will show us better times?”
Let your face smile on us, Lord.
7 You have given me greater joy
than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine.
8 In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. (Psalm 4:4-8 NLT)
I needed reminding to be silent when I’m angry.
I needed reminding to sleep on it when I’m angry.
I want the Lord’s face to smile on me and I’m not sure that happens when I’m angry. When I’m angry, my thoughts are consumed with me. If I can somehow take a step back and let the Lord take back control of my thoughts, then my response when I’m angry will honor Him. I think it’s very wise to not talk when I’m angry. I think it’s wise to ask for the Lord’s help when you’re angry.
Pressing On!
