Sinking
I’ve never been in a sinking boat that I know of. I had an old Bayliner boat (emphasis on old) a few years ago that started constantly bilging water so I took the boat to my mechanic and found out that the transom was nearly gone. It had been a great family boat, but my mechanic warned me that if the transom failed, the boat would sink really quick. I decided it was time for a different boat. I’m over 50 so I’m embracing the fact that I’m in a “pontoon stage of life” so that is the style of boat I have now. I love the fact that I’m not worried about bilging or really sinking.
Hosea speaks to Israel about sinking into corruption. He calls them out and let’s them know that the Lord will punish them. Check this out…
7 The days of punishment are coming,
the days of reckoning are at hand.
Let Israel know this.
Because your sins are so many
and your hostility so great,
the prophet is considered a fool,
the inspired person a maniac.
8 The prophet, along with my God,
is the watchman over Ephraim,[a]
yet snares await him on all his paths,
and hostility in the house of his God.
9 They have sunk deep into corruption,
as in the days of Gibeah.
God will remember their wickedness
and punish them for their sins. (Hosea 9:7-9 NIV)
Sinking implies to me that drowning could happen. I certainly don’t want to drown, I want to live and breathe. I do believe that sin is fun for a season and then the payment starts and it can sink a person. It’s sort of like debt. I could buy that brand new truck or car, but the payments might just drown me in debt.
I want the Lord’s help controlling anything that might drown me. I want to flee from sin that would separate me from Him. I want to stay away from debt that would make me a slave to someone else and possibly sink me financially. I want my life to be buoyant and float on top. I don’t want to sink in to sin – I’ve been there and done that. I want to pursue the heart of God and hold on to Him as my Life Preserver. He will hold me and protect me from the things that seek to sink me.
Pressing On!
