Signal

Trumpet musical instrument isolatedI grew up watching old western movies and TV shows. The US Calvary back in the days of the Wild West always had a bugler. He sounded the charge as they rode into battle on their horses and he sounded the retreat. I’ve always been fascinated by the order and the formation of the military even back then. There are certain signals that mean certain commands. Without hearing a word spoken, the military know just what to do when a certain sound is made.

Moses and the Israelites were preparing to go on the move. They were organized by families/tribes. Each family/tribe had a leader representing them before Moses & Aaron. They were giving signal instructions with the two trumpets. Check this out…

9 When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you, sound a blast on the trumpets. Then you will be remembered by the Lord your God and rescued from your enemies. 10 Also at your times of rejoicing – your appointed festivals and New Moon feasts – you are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the Lord your God.’ (Numbers 10:9-10 NIV)

Today I use all sorts of signals to get the attention of my family. I might send a group text or make a phone call to each one. I whistle for the dog to come home. I also blow the horn when I’m in my vehicle. I have an alarm system in my house that will signal an intrusion. There is even signals my car to alert others when I’m turning left, right or stopping. There are lots of signals all around my world.

The Lord doesn’t sound an alarm to remind me to spend time with Him. He does prompt me by His Holy Spirit signal inside my heart. It’s not a loud shrill sound. It’s usually a still small voice. I have learned to listen for His signals so that I can move when whispers into my heart. I would rather be prompted by Him to action, than any other motivation. He leads me according to His plan NOT mine. My role is to trust and obey.

Pressing On!
