Sickness
There are sicknesses that lead to death. There are sicknesses that are chronic, irritating, and inconvenient. There are other sicknesses that are treatable and complete healing can result from proper treatment and time.
I’ve never been one who is afraid of going to the doctor. If I’m sick, I want to get well. I don’t like being sick at home or wherever. I like feeling good and getting along with my life and purpose.
Jesus came to heal the physically sick, but also the spiritually sick. The religious leaders thought that they were well, when in fact, they were full of pride and self-righteousness. Jesus saw that in them and called it out. Once, when He was eating at the home of Matthew, the tax collector and the religious leaders called Him out for eating with such “scum”. His reply was pointed and thought provoking. Check this out….
12 When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.”13 Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” (Matthew 9:12-13 NLT)
The first thing I know is that I’m sick (with sin) and I need a doctor – Jesus to heal me.
When I start to think I’m something that I’m really not – pride and self-righteousness has entered the picture and I need Him more than ever.
I am having surgery on a bum shoulder later this week. I have a 9mm tear in my rotator cuff and I need a doctor to repair it surgically. I must allow the physicians, nurses, and medical team to take care of my ailing shoulder. I should also turn to Jesus to care for my sinful nature and heal my heart again today.
Pressing On!
