Short-Term Memory
I remember as my Grandparents aged they often had horrible short-term memory, but they could remember something that happened to them at age 12. I’ve also known people who had problems remembering what happened 5 minutes ago. Memory is an amazing characteristic of our human brain. We store things in our memory and may not use it for years. I do “hide things from myself” occasionally. That is another way of saying, “I don’t remember where I put it”!
Hosea is speaking to Israel’s memory problem. They have forgotten Egypt and the miracles the Lord did there. They are about to punished for the rebellion that comes directly from lack of memory. Check this out…
2 Israel cries out to me,
“Our God, we acknowledge you!”
3 But Israel has rejected what is good;
an enemy will pursue him.
4 They set up kings without my consent;
they choose princes without my approval.
With their silver and gold
they make idols for themselves
to their own destruction.
5 Throw out your calf-idol, Samaria!
My anger burns against them.
How long will they be incapable of purity?
14 Israel has forgotten his Maker
and built palaces;
Judah has fortified many towns.
But I will send fire on their cities
that will consume their fortresses.’ (Hosea 8:2-5;14 NIV)
As I read the Word of God, I reminded of Who He is and What He’s done in my life. My short-term memory and my long-term memory flourishes and I can totally see the Power of God in my life. I don’t ever want to forget His Presence and His Power in my life. I hope that I remember this every day for the rest of my life. Maybe my memory of God can “jog” someone else’s memory of Him too!
Pressing On!
