Serving
I think when I was young, I dreamed of being wealthy and having people serve me all the time. I’d have people make my bed, iron my clothes, take out the trash – all sorts of stuff I didn’t want to do. When I got older and could afford to hire people to do things for me, I realize how frivolous it is because I’m not “above” serving my family or simply taking care of things around the house or around the office.
The more I understand the Word of God, I understand that in God’s Economy serving is the highest and best form of leading. Jesus, the very Son of God came to serve and encouraged His followers to serve.
On one occasion, the Mom of James and John asked Jesus for special favor for her boys when His Kingdom was set up. She wanted them to sit right beside Him, one on each side. She was asking for “positions of power” for her boys. Jesus used this moment to teach about serving. Check this out…
24 When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.25 But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. 26 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. 28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:24-28 NLT)
What if all our local leaders served in this way?
What if all our elected officials served in this way?
God’s leadership model is from the bottom up, not from the top down.
Leadership is at its core, influence. What if I could use my influence to be a servant leader? I believe that as I grown to know the Lord, my leading became serving. I believe that all leadership is servant leadership.
Pressing On!
