Self-Controlled
I went to bed last night planning to get up early and ride for 6 miles or so. After hitting the snooze twice, (which I normally don’t do) I realized that my body didn’t feel like riding. So I opted for my coffee first thing while I try to wake up my mind. After my reading in Titus, I realize that I had let my body be in control instead of me telling my body what it was going to do. This happens way too often. I eat too much some times because my body says, “more, more, more”. I must continue to fight the battle to be self-controlled. I must let my head tell my body what it will do and what it won’t do. My head needs to control the urges of my body – this is at the heart of self-control. Paul is instructing the young pastor, Titus about this subject. Check this out…
11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. 15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you. (Titus 2:11-15 NIV)
I think for as long as I live, I will have to work at self-control. I realize that I’m the one responsible for what I do and say. I can’t say, “the devil made me do it”. I have choices every day and sometimes they are good and sometimes they are not so good. When I’m self-controlled, I can pursue the heart of God with relentless passion and drive. When I’m self-controlled, my life as a whole has order and rhythm that is right. Self-control also recaptures the proper perspective on many areas of life. Self-control can be accomplished with the Lord’s help and when I’m practicing self-control, He has a lot more room to work in me.
